In Sri Lanka, people call this sea salt container a lunu polkatta. Skilled Sri Lankan craftsmen make it from coconut shell and wood. It comes with a mini coconut shell spoon, so you can pick up salt with ease. Many families still keep salt this way in the kitchen.
Size of the sea salt container
The container is about 4 to 5 inches wide and 6 to 7 inches high. The size is big enough for a good amount of sea salt or rock salt. Also, it is small enough to sit next to your stove or on the dining table.
What is a lunu polkatta?
Lunu polkatta means salt coconut shell. Long ago, villagers stored sea salt in a coconut shell with a small lid. The shell keeps the salt in one place, and the lid keeps out dust. Today, this traditional salt container is a lovely piece for modern kitchens too.
Made from natural coconut shell and wood
Our craftsmen cut, shape and polish each container by hand. The lid and the base use wood. As a result, the container looks natural and warm. The container is non-toxic, so it is safe for your salt. Also, every shell is different, so each sea salt container has its own pattern.
Ways to use your salt container
Use it for sea salt, rock salt or table salt. It also works well for sugar, spice mixes or pepper. For example, you can keep it on the counter for cooking, or place it on the table for guests. It also makes a thoughtful gift for a housewarming or Avurudu.
Care tips and island wide delivery
Keep the container dry, because salt takes in water. Wipe it with a dry or slightly damp cloth, and never soak it. We deliver island wide, from Colombo to Kandy and Galle. You can also pay by cash on delivery. See our coconut spoon and our coconut shell bowl for more coconut shell items. Watch our work in our short videos on YouTube.
