Asmi Spoon

This asmi spoon (also spelled aasmi spoon) is the traditional tool for making asmi, the lacy deep fried rice flour sweet that Sri Lankan families enjoy at the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. It has a coconut shell scoop with small holes and a long wooden handle.

What is asmi?

Asmi is a crisp, honeycomb shaped sweet made from rice flour and coconut milk. Cooks fry it in coconut oil, rest it for a few days, and fry it again. Finally, they top it with a coloured sugar syrup.

How the asmi spoon works

The cook pours the thick batter into the scoop. Then the batter runs through the small holes into the hot oil, and the cook moves the spoon in a circle. As a result, the batter makes the fine lacy pattern that asmi is known for.

Size of the asmi spoon

The spoon is 17 inches long, and the coconut shell scoop is 4.5 inches wide. Therefore the long handle keeps your hand away from the pan. Also, the size may differ slightly because each spoon is made by hand.

Skilled Sri Lankan craftsmen shape the coconut shell and the wood, and then they polish the spoon. Moreover, coconut shell and wood are natural, safe and non-toxic materials, and the spoon has no plastic.

Care instructions

Wash the spoon by hand with mild soap and water. Then wipe it with a clean cloth. Let it dry in the open air.
